(Jacob Bruns, Headline USA) Professor Sami Schalk of the University of Wisconsin-Madison claimed during a recent panel discussion that after engaging in “disability studies,” she discovered that she, too, is disabled.
According to Schalk, who calls herself a polyamorous pleasure activist, “there was a part of [her] that knew” she was disabled from the time she began her research, Campus Reform reported.
“So I took this [disability studies] class, and it blew my mind. Just fireworks going off in my brain.”
She noted that she had yet to apply critical theory to all aspects of life, including disabilities.
“I had spent so much time thinking about race and gender and class and sexuality, and I had just not been thinking about disability with the same critical lens,” Schalk said, recalling her first encounter as an undergraduate.
She eventually discovered that she may also be disabled, despite not knowing that before.
“I had to grapple with my own privilege within the disability system, because at the time I didn’t understand myself as disabled,” she continued, suggesting that it was much like her discovery of her own queerness.
“[T]here was a part of me that knew, just like there was a part of me that knew I was queer.”
Schalk also discovered that the field lacked diversity, giving her an inside track for peddling fake racism.
“There [were] just not a lot of folks of color, not a lot of people talking about race and disability in the field.” As a result, she claims to have found that the field is remarkably racist, drawing on “anti-Blackness.”
“It’s from racism,” added Schalk, who is listed as an associate professor Gender & Women’s Studies. Her endeavors as a newly self-realized disabled he/she, led to the publication of her/his most recent book, Black Disability Politics.
Professor Schalk’s other claim to fame is her twerking with Lizzo after attending a “twerkshop.”
Despite Schalk’s antics, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, reaffirmed its commitment to “the academic freedom and freedom of expression of its faculty.”
