Poison control centers report a 1500% increase in calls related to weight loss drugs

NJ Advance Media for NJ.com – As weight loss drugs have become more popular, so have calls to poison control centers, according to newly released data.

From January to November 2023, U.S. poison control centers reported receiving 3,000 calls related to semaglutide, according to ABC News. That is about a 1,500% increase in calls from 2019.

Semaglutide is the active ingredient in trendy weight loss drugs such as Wegovy, Ozempic and Rybelsus.

Wegovy is FDA-approved for weight loss, but the other two medications, Ozempic and Rybelsus, are Type 2 diabetes medications used “off-label” to treat weight loss.
