FOX NEWS – Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley on Friday took aim at Vice President Kamala Harris, saying that she can’t be trusted to deal with the border crisis.
Haley cited a 2018 comparison the then-senator made between Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Ku Klux Klan. Haley tweeted:
“How can we trust Kamala Harris to deal with the border crisis when she compared ICE to the KKK in 2018? Answer: We can’t.”
Haley was referring to a contentious confirmation hearing in November 2018, when Harris asked Ronald Vitiello — who was then-President Donald Trump’s nominee to lead ICE — if he was “aware of the perception” of a similarity between ICE and the KKK.
Harris had pointed to a tweet from Vitiello from 2015 in which he compared the Democratic Party to a “liberal-cratic” or “neo-Klanist” entity — something for which Vitiello apologized
“What is the history that would then make those words wrong?” Harris asked, to which Vitiello responded by saying the KKK would be labeled as a domestic terrorist group by today’s standards and was motivated by race and ethnicity and tried to use “fear and force.”
“Are you aware of the perception of many about how the power and the discretion at ICE is being used to enforce the laws and do you see any parallels?” she had asked.
Vitiello pushed back saying “I do not see any parallels” between the agency and the KKK and inquired whether she was asking him if the two were in the same category.
“No, I’m very specific about what I’m asking you. Are you aware of a perception that the way that they …” Harris went on, before the nominee said, “I see none.”
But Harris pressed on:
“Are you aware that there is a perception that ICE is administering its power in a way that is causing fear and intimidation, particularly among immigrants and specifically among immigrants coming from Mexico and Central America?” …Click source below to read more.
More than half of all migrants at US-Mexico border expelled under health order in recent weeks
By Geneva Sands, March 25, 2021
(CNN)The Biden administration expelled more than half of the migrants arriving at the US-Mexico border in recent weeks under a Trump-era health order that has been continued by the Biden administration, according to preliminary data reviewed by CNN.
Of the some 103,000 migrants encountered by Customs and Border Protection in the three weeks through March 17, more than 61,000 were expelled under the health authority known as “Title 42.” Around 41,800 were allowed to remain in the US.
President Joe Biden said Thursday that “the vast majority, the overwhelming majority of people coming to the border and crossing are being sent back” during his first presidential news conference.
He spent much of the press conference facing questions about the crisis on the southern border, promising that conditions for unaccompanied minors arriving in the US will improve and blaming the prior administration and cooler weather for the spike of migrants at the border.
He went on to say the US is sending back the “vast majority of the families that are coming.”
But the majority of migrant families detained by US Border Patrol during those three weeks remained in the US, the data shows.
In the three weeks ending March 17, there were more than 21,000 family members apprehended by Border Patrol at the southwest border who were processed into the US, according to data. During the same period, around 7,600 family members were expelled.
The Department of Homeland Security continues to expel “noncitizen single adults and many family units” pursuant to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention public health order, an administration official said Thursday … Read more.
