Doctor warns ‘stop using cough syrups’ and use this common substitute instead

Medical expert shares crucial warning about cough syrup use

THE MIRROR [UK] – Coughs and colds are making the rounds, and it’s nearing the time when people try different remedies to get rid of their coughs as quickly as possible.

However, if you’re someone who depends on cough syrups to try easing your symptoms, you might want to stop, as a doctor has warned against it.

Doctor Sami, who’s known for giving health advice to his followers on TikTok, recently urged people to stop using the common treatments, and there’s an important reason why.

According to professional guidance, you’re better off avoiding them, and there are reportedly better ways to try soothing your symptoms.

It comes after multiple tips have been shared with Brits ahead of the winter season. Indeed, Dr Amir Khan said there are “red flag” symptoms you need to watch out for too.

Doctor Sami said: “Cough syrups do not work, but there is something that does, which is much cheaper. So I’ll tell you three of these cheap and easy cough remedies.

“Now most coughs, especially from colds or viruses, are caused [by] inflammation or irritation of the airways, and cough syrups, which are basically sugar, water and sedatives, don’t really address this. In fact, a major review of cough syrups found no good evidence that thay can reliably reduce cough symptoms.”, reports the Express.

“Honey, on other hand, does show good evidence to reduce cough symptoms – better than placebo and cough syrups, especially for nighttime coughs. We think that’s because honey coats the throat, which reduces irritation, and it also has mild, natural anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties.”

Throughout the clip, the expert disclosed that menthol can similarly prove successful in easing symptoms.
