You won’t need a calculator for this meal plan. Instead of adding up numbers, you swap out bad fats for heart-healthy ones.
Go for olive oil instead of butter. Try fish or poultry rather than red meat. Enjoy fresh fruit and skip sugary, fancy desserts.
Eat your fill of flavorful veggies and beans. Nuts are good, but stick to a handful a day. You can have whole-grain bread and wine, but in moderate amounts.
Mediterranean diet claims first place
The magazine also ranked both as easiest to follow, with the Mediterranean diet claiming first place and the DASH diet fourth. Both also tied for first place as best for people with diabetes and claimed top spots in some of the other categories.
The experts considered how easy a diet is to follow, the likelihood of both short-term and long-term weight loss, and how effective it is against heart disease and diabetes.
There is no single diet that is best for everyone, says one of the experts, David Katz, MD,. The best one, he says in a statement, is ”one that can be adopted, managed and sustained over time.”
“I’m thrilled to see the Mediterranean diet tied for the #1 spot overall,” says Katherine Brooking, a registered dietitian and nutrition blogger for WebMD.
“Studies consistently show that the Mediterranean pattern of eating is strongly related to a reduction in many chronic diseases — including heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers.”
