The Morning Call – After a day of drinking and rafting on the Delaware River with his wedding party, a 28-year-old groom sexually assaulted a bridesmaid in the men’s locker room at the Shawnee Inn in Monroe County, according to court records.
The woman told state police she woke up to Daniel J. Carney, of Stroudsburg, on top of her in the locker room’s shower on Aug. 30, two days before his wedding, court records say.
State police began investigating the morning after the wedding when they were called to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Pocono where the 29-year-old woman told hospital staff that she had been sexually assaulted, court records say.
During their investigation, state troopers viewed surveillance footage that showed Mr. Carney pulling the woman into the locker room and reviewed text messages and a phone call where Mr. Carney apologized to her, police said.
A trooper interviewed Mr. Carney and he said he was extremely intoxicated the night of Aug. 30, and initially said he “felt like he was taken advantage of by the victim,” according to court records.
He later changed his story and admitted he had actually grabbed her arms and pulled her in, police said.
Mr. Carney was charged on Thursday with involuntary deviate sexual intercourse of an unconscious person, simple assault and indecent assault. He has not been arraigned yet, police said.
