DHS Pleads For DOD Help With Migrant Health, Housing Crisis

The Hill – The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has asked the Department of Defense (DOD) for more assistance, including more tents, to handle a surge of migrants coming across the border with Mexico, a Pentagon spokesman confirmed.

Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan has not formally responded to the request, but he discussed it with acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan on Saturday as the two traveled to McAllen, Texas, to visit the U.S.-Mexico border.

Shanahan’s trip came after Customs and Border Protection said last week that it expects more than 500,000 migrants crossing the border this fiscal year.

Shanahan said troops would remain at the border until it is secure.

“We’re not going to leave until the border is secure,” he said. “This isn’t about identifying a problem. It’s about fixing a problem more quickly.” Read more.

Federally funded charity solicits funds for Mother’s Day gifts

Breitbart – The International Rescue Committee, which receives millions of dollars through the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Refugee Resettlement, is soliciting money to pay for gifts for migrants on the U.S. border with Mexico

“When families flee their homes, they often leave with nothing but the clothes on their backs,” the committee’s website states. “At the U.S.-Mexico border and in crisis areas around the world, we provide families with emergency support and the basic necessities they need to survive and recover.”

“Emergency kits can include food, water, diapers, hygiene items, clothing, and other critical supplies. $60 can provide refugee and asylum-seeking parents with immediate and critical supplies to help them care for their families,” the website states.
