Hong Kong (CNN) After weeks of facing fierce attacks from Republicans, top US infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci now has a new critic: Chinese state media.
“US elites degenerate further in morality, and Fauci is one of them,” was the headline of a blistering opinion piece penned by Hu Xijin, editor-in-chief of the state-run Global Times this week.
In the article, Hu accused the top US infectious disease expert of “fanning a huge lie against China” by hyping the theory that the coronavirus was leaked from a Wuhan lab.
Another article in the Global Times declared that Fauci had “betrayed Chinese scientists.”
The anger is centered on Fauci’s remarks this month that he is no longer convinced the Covid-19 pandemic originated naturally.
At a fact-checking symposium on May 11, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases said:
“I think we should continue to investigate what went on in China until we continue to find out to the best of our ability what happened,”
The comments appear to be a shift from Fauci’s earlier view that the disease likely was the result of animal to human transmission.
Fauci’s comments were followed by a Wall Street Journal exclusive, citing a US intelligence report, that said three researchers from the Wuhan Institute of Virology became sick enough in November 2019 that they sought hospital care … Click here to read more.

FOX NEWS – Amid the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) updated mask guidance and new information coming to light about the origins of COVID-19, experts and Americans alike are questioning the credibility of those calling the shots throughout the pandemic — including the high-profile Dr. Anthony Fauci.
Dr. Marty Makary, Fox News medical contributor and professor of health policy and management at Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health, said:
“The agency [CDC] has lost all credibility.
“They have been consistently delinquent, misrepresenting COVID risk levels. The public sees through the CDC’s flawed guidance on schools, travel and summer camps that use the guise of science. That’s why 52% of Americans no longer trust the CDC.”
Dr. Brett Giroir, the former White House Coronavirus Task Force testing czar and former Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) assistant secretary, said the confusion surrounding the CDC’s new guidance is a result of “awful communication and planning around the guidance” as well as a “terrible choice of words.”
“The real message is: If you are vaccinated, and not in a special group like the immunosuppressed, it is safe for you and for others around you for you to be without a mask indoors,” Giroir said. “But, if you are in areas of significant disease or in a high risk circumstance and you are not vaccinated, it is still safer to wear a mask than not to wear one.
